Asa Lovejoy 1808 - 1882
Lawyer, legislator, member of the constitutional convention of 1857, mayor of Oregon City and founder with Francis Pettygrove of Portland. Lovejoy And Pettygrove purchased the squatters claim of William Overton and in 1845 platted16 blocks, the townsite of present day Portland. Lovejoy wanted to name the new town Boston and Pettygrove, Portland. They flipped a penny and Pettygrove, from Maine, won. Lovejoy subsequently sold his interest to Pettygrove but remained active in state and local affairs and was widely esteemed as one of Oregon’s earliest and finest citizens.
