The Nittany Lion Shrine at Pennsylvania State University was dedicated on October 24, 1942 during Homecoming. Animalier Heinz Warneke and stonecutter Joseph Garatti created it from a 13-ton block of Indiana Limestone. The shrine was chosen from six models submitted by Warneke.

When I attended school here, I believed the story that students from Syracuse painted the lion orange. The night before Penn State plays Syracuse, there is a vigil to guard the lion against a recurrence of this. But this wikipedia article teaches that it was a ruse by Sue Paterno to generate student support for the football team.
