The Martín Cárdenas Botanical Garden has various sections such as the Bromeliads, Cactus, Amaryllis, Arboretum area with many native and exotic species. In addition to these sections it also has the sections of Medicinal Plants and Nursery. There is also the "Martín Cárdenas" National Forest Herbarium, created in 1976 and which has approximately 40,000 species from all over Bolivia in the facilities of the Universidad Mayor de San Simón, as well as a library specialized in botanical topics.
The purpose of the garden is to contribute to the conservation of plant resources in the region, conducting scientific research and teaching through its facilities on botanical and environmental areas.
The Martín Cárdenas Botanical Garden arose as a tribute to the greatest of the Bolivian botanists Martín Cárdenas Hermosa, born in Cochabamba, a great field researcher, and founder of the Faculty of Biology of the Universidad Mayor de San Simón and rector of the same for two managements.
