The Bovenlandse Sluis was constructed at the end of the 19th century, simultaneously with the digging of the Bergsche Maas.

The lock still has a function. The water board can discharge large quantities of water from the Drongelens Canal into the Maas via the Bovenlandse Sluis, when this is no longer possible at Den Bosch. In addition, the lock is part of the Maasdijk, which protects the municipalities of Heusden and Waalwijk during high water.
