The stone ruins of the former Palmerston (Darwin) Town Hall were built using local porcellanite stone and cypress pine in 1882-83.In 1940 the Navy took over the building as part of its shore base, HMAS Melville, after the Navy moved out of the building in 1959 it served as a motor vehicle registry, and then a museum until December 1974.The walls are all that remained standing of the building following Cyclone Tracy in 1974
