The first lighthouse to shine on the Great Lakes was built in Erie, PA in 1818. A historical marker, located at the intersection of Lighthouse Street and Lakefront Drive, commemorates this fact. The wording on the sign says:
"Erie Land Lighthouse. The first lighthouse to shine on the Great Lakes. Created to aid navigation and promote shipping, the original 20-ft. beacon (1818) and the subsequent brick tower (1858) were built upon unstable soil. The sandstone tower (1867) was the 3rd built here."
The 3rd lighthouse mentioned on the sign is still standing today and is located about 150 feet to the west of the historical marker. There is another sign next to the current lighthouse which provides more information about the history of the lighthouses at this site.
