Llyn Alaw is a man-made reservoir managed by Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water which provides drinking water for the northern half of Anglesey.

The reservoir was officially opened on the 21st October 1966.

The monument is located overlooking the reservoir close to the access road. It appears to be a concrete pillar with a mounting on top for surveying equipment to be attached. The monument is protected from the elements by a corrugated plastic sheath.

Historically the monument would have been used to monitor the water level in the reservoir to ensure there would be enough drinking water for the catchment area.

I would assume that this is but one of a number of similar monuments located around the shore of the reservoir.
