Blairsville's A.M.E. Zion congregation was organized in the 1840's, with services initially held in the town's old log school house located at N. Liberty Street and North Alley.
In September 1842, Blairsville borough council agreed to rent the building to the congregation "to hold Sabbath meetings." Among the early members of the church were Catherine Brown, known as "Aunt Kitty," Peter, Braxton and Emily Jackson, Abraham Johnston, George Bronson, and Esther McGinity.
Catherine "Aunt Kitty" Brown had escaped enslavement years earlier with her husband John. Aunt Kitty and John were assisted by UGRR conductors Frank and Katy Coleman who operated an Underground Railroad site at Ross Furnace, New Florence.
