From the sign:
"On this spot once stood the two story house of Lewis Johnston. Johnston born in Derry Township, Westmoreland County in 1805. His mother Rachel was a slave-for-life to the celebrated "hero" of Barr and Wallace Forts, Gen. James Wilson. By the circumstance of his birth and Pennsylvania's 1780 " gradual abolition of slavery law, Lewis was bound to Wilson until his 28th birthday.
Lewis Johnston and his wife Jane Bronson Johnston were UGRR conductors in Blairsville and Allegheny City (North Pittsburgh), PA. It is believed that Mr. Johnston transported freedom seekers as he hauled iron blooms over the mountains between Blairsville to Hollidaysburg. Freedom seeker Richard Newman was living with the Johnston family here on W. Campbell St. when his attempted kidnapping occurred April 1, 1858."
