Bovina Cemetery had an informal beginning; then part of XIT ranch, this site was used to bury cowboys who passed away on the ranch. Tradition holds that most of those graves were marked only with names like "Dusty" or "Big Jim" and today they are lost. The cemetery now maintains a separated area on the east side marked "Known But To God" that contains many grave sites marked only with bare crosses or other simple markers. I counted about twenty here on my visit. There are also a few marked graves in this corner.
