The Boijmans van Beuningen Depot will be the first public art depot in the world. You will soon find the entire collection of the museum of the same name. These 151.000 art objects are currently housed in five different depots in the Netherlands and Belgium, but will soon be located in one building. The current depots have suffered flooding in the past and the safety and sustainability have been unsatisfactory. That is why the idea arose for a publicly accessible depot in the middle of the city. Thousands of mirrors The 39,5 meter-high building is a true eye-catcher in the city due to its mirrored exterior and its round shape. Inside there is a huge atrium with crossing stairs and a brasserie on the roof where everyone can go for free via a lift. Hard Hat Tour The depot is expected to open to the public at the end of 2020, but until that time you can also get a tour of the building site via De Rotterdam Tours. During the tour, an expert guide will elaborate on the architecture and technology of the building and you will get an exclusive look at the construction site. Unfortunately, due to the construction intensity, the tours have been temporarily suspended. Did you know… Rotterdammers like to give their buildings a nickname. The Central Station is called the Kapsalon after the shoarma dish in the shiny containers and the Erasmus Bridge is also called the Swan. For the depot, De Pot, de Bloempot, Grote Spiegel and Glimmende Bloempot, among others, are doing the rounds. Let us know below if you still have a fun one! TIP: The Boijmans van Beuningen Museum will close 2019 from May for an 7 year-long renovation, but you don't have to miss a thing of the highlights. The museum is going to collaborate with eight neighboring locations in the city to create eleven exhibitions with 500 masterpieces under the name 'Boijmans at the neighbors'. Next stop: Before the renovation begins, the Boijmans will close with the exhibition 'The Netherlands <> bauhaus - pioneers of a new world'. And it just so happens that one of the most beautiful Bauhaus buildings is just a stone's throw away from the depot! Cross the street diagonally towards the t-junction / white building, walk into the street and you will find Huis Sonneveld on the right. Source: Boijmans van Buningen
