This section of the Juniata River is known as the Lewistown Narrows is a natural gap between the Shade Mountain and Blue Mountain. The terrain creates a natural barrier restricting access to a six mile stretch of the Juniata.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has built an access point with parking and a concrete boat ramp at the west end of this portion of the river.
The river is typically a warm water fishery holding smallmouth bass, muskellunge, walleye, and catfish, panfish such as bluegill and crappie. The river is generally a smooth flow with good bottom structure of consisting of limestone boulders. The average width of the Juniata through the Lewistown Narrows is 240 feet. For those wishing to float tis section of the river the Mifflintown Access is about seven miles east of this put in.
A boat is recommended but not a requirement. There are back fishing opportunities along the river.
