The Iraqi War Cairn is dedicated to ALL who were hurt or killed by the recent war in Iraq. While the war was politically ended in 2011, it still continued for another decade as an insurgency (as the numbers are still tracked in 2018). Now there are less than 2000 soldiers in country and the U.S. will likely continue to have some type of presence beyond a typical compliment of personnel for the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, however the numbers will not come close to what they were in the peak of the war.
Sign Text:
Iraqi War Cairn
A Reminder of the Human Cost of War
U.S. Military Dead 4541
U.S. Wounded 300,000 to 500,000
U.S. Civilian Dead 800
Iraqi Civilian Dead 182,272 to 655,000
Iraqi Refugees 4-5,000,000
Note: The small plaque on the base board of the sign states that it was a gift from a fellow church in Romania, but it seems that the use of the sign has changed and the sign no longer holds a map.
Plaque Text: This Peace Garden and the carved wood frame for the map of the campus are gifts given in 2018 from The Szentgericei Unitarius Templom to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax to honor our partnership, friendship, and mutual support since 1991.
