"A l'abri de ces nouveaux remparts, la ville de Calais se développe très vite sous l'impulsion des comtes de Boulogne. En 1300 on estime à plus de 10 000 le nombre de ses habitants. En 1214, Adrien de Wissant fit construire une église dédiée à Notre-Dame et érigée en paroisse en 1224. Cette église devint le transept nord de l'édifice actuel dès lors que furent entrepris les premiers travaux d'agrandissement à la fin de XVlllè siècle.

Après la prise de Calais en 1347, Edouard lll rattacha Notre-Dame à l'archevêché de Canterbury. La ville ayant été vidée de ses habitants, les anglais firent appel à des ouvriers flamands, alors alliés, pour construire les parties hautes de la nef, le chœur et le clocher. Les carrières de pierre étant inaccessibles, toute l'église fut montée en briques de sable. Les chapiteaux à motif de choux frisés, les bandes d'arcatures ogivales des murs extérieurs et les tourelles en encorbellement sont la signature des maçons flamands.

Cependant le clocher à la croisée du transept, le chevet plat, les voûtes lambrissées et surtout les arcs en forme d'anses de panier, du style Tudor, des fenêtres hautes de la nef, donnent à Notre-Dame l'allure d'une cathédrale anglaise.

Après la reconquête de Calais en 1958, Notre-Dame devint l'église la plus importante de la ville avec la disparition de l'église Saint-Nicolas démolie pour construire la Citadelle de Calais.

Au XVlllè siècle, une chapelle axiale vint prolonger l'édifice; la longueur de Notre-Dame était désormais de 88 m et ses murs pouvaient accueillir plus de 6 000 fidèles. Pendant la Révolution, Notre-Dame fur tyransformée en temple de la raison puis en entrepôt, pour être rendue au culte en 1802.

A partir de 1863, l'archiprêtre de Lencquesaing, doyen de Calais, engagea d'important travaux de décoration dans le style néogothique: un réseau d'ogives en plâtre recouvrit les anciennes voûtes de bois et l'on reconstruisit le portail principal.

En 1911 eut lieu une grande messe émouvante en hommage aux victimes de la catastrophe du sous-main Le Pluviose et en 1921, en toute intimité, se marièrent dans l'église le jeune capitaine Charles de Gaulle et la calaisienne Yvonne Vendroux. "
