This small metal sculpture is in a small residential street near to the local church.
It is of a headstocks which has come to represent the mining industry in the modern age and art. It is made of metal and painted black. Growing up through the centre are three long stemmed flowers. The heads of which seem to be drooping.
I can find no official mention of why this sculpture was placed in this place in particular, who the artist was or when it was placed.
However the village of Burradon was a mining village in the past. There was also a bad accident in the nearby colliery in 1860 when an explosion caused the death of 76 workers including boys as young as 10 years old. It is said that almost every single family in the area lost a family member.
The drooping flowers brings to mind a mourning of sorts. As if they are dipping their heads in respect to the lives lost.
