Brookfield was first settled by Europeans in the 1660's as part of the Quaboag Plantation lands. A hexagonal peace pole on the town common commemorates this event. The pole is made of wood and the language plates are made of resin plastic. They contain the universal message of peace: MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH IN six languages.
