The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is 175' tall making it the tallest lighthouse in Florida and behind Cape Hatteras Light, NC on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. It was built in 1887 and replaces a lighthouse in this site that was built in 1835, damaged in the Second Seminole War, abandoned, and collapsed.
In 1970, the Coast Guard abandoned the lighthouse station. The Lighthouse Preservation Association was formed in 1972 to manage the lighthouse as a museum. In 1982 the Coast Guard restored the lighthouse to active service. The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same year.
