HISTORIQUE
Quatre types de moulin à vent existent en France ; le moulin tour, le moulin cavier; le moulin à pivot fixe et le moulin à pivot tournant. Ce dernier est aussi appelé moulin massier ; moulin de type gregois, moulin à tonnelle ou moulin turquois.
Le moulin à pivot tournant se trouvait principalement dans l'ouest de la-France. Mentionné dans des doduments iconographiques dès le XIIIe siècle, il est quasiment abandonné aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Peu sont encore exploités au XIXe siècle. A ce jour; il n'en n'existe aucun encore en état. Seuls subsistent les vestiges d'une trentaine de tours, dont cinq en Vendée.
En ce qui concerne celui des Hautes-Mers, il dépendait du logis du Breuil (tout comme le pigeonnier non loin de là) et était encore en activité en 1722.
FONCTIONNEMENT
La tour est creuse afin d'insérer un pivot en bois, vertical. Selon les époques, ce pivot sur lequel la hucherolle (cabine) était solidaire, reposait sur une crapaudine en fonte posée soit dans une grosse poutre en bois logée dans la base du moulin dans les "lumières", soit dans une pierre. Une porte unique basse en permettait la maintenance. L'ensemble était orientable au moyen d'une échelle-queue.
La cabine comportait deux étages : un étage supérieur au niveau des meules pour y verser le grain dans la trémie et un étage inférieur qui sert à récupérer la mouture.
CARACTÉRISTIQUES
La tour mesure 5 m de haut et 3 m dediamètre. Si on y ajoute la cabine, et le toit, l'ensemble atteint plus de 8 m de haut. Quant aux ailes, elles mesurent chacune 5m de long.
Deux spécificités techniqùes caractérisent ce moulin : l' axe des ailes est horizontal (et non incliné) et les meules se situent au-dessus de
l'arbre moteur des ailes.
RESTAURATION
Abandonné depuis très longtemps, le moulin des Hautes-Mers ne possédait plus que sa tour, en grande partie rongée par la végétation envahissante qui la mettait peu à peu en péril.
La commune a acheté le moulin en 2002. Après des recherches historiques, scientifiques et techniques, le projet de restauration est labellisé par la Fondation du patrimoine, ce qui permet de recevoir des dons de particuliers et d'entreprises. Une première tranche de travaux (tour maçonnée) s'est déroulée début 2012. Elle a été financée grâce aux donateurs, la Fondation du patrimoine, la ville de Talmont-Saint-Hilaire et le Conseil Général de la Vendée.

HISTORY
Four types of windmills exist in France: the tower mill, the cavier mill, the fixed-pivot mill and the rotating-pivot mill. The latter is also called the massier mill, the gregois mill, the arbor mill or the turquois mill.

OPERATION
The tower is hollow in order to insert a vertical wooden pivot. According to the times, this pivot on which the hucherolle (cabin) was solidary, rested on a cast-iron spade placed either in a big wooden beam lodged in the base of the mill in the "lights", or in a stone. A single low door allowed the maintenance. The whole was adjustable by means of a ladder-tail.
The cabin had two floors: an upper floor at the level of the millstones to pour the grain into the hopper and a lower floor to collect the grind.
CHARACTERISTICS
The tower is 5 m high and 3 m wide. If we add the cabin and the roof, the whole thing reaches more than 8 m high. As for the wings, they are each 5m long.
Two technical specificities characterize this mill: the axis of the wings is horizontal (and not inclined) and the millstones are located above
the driving shaft of the wings.
RESTORATION
Abandoned for a very long time, the mill of Hautes-Mers had only its tower left, largely eaten away by invading vegetation that was gradually endangering it.
The commune bought the mill in 2002. After historical, scientific and technical research, the restoration project was approved by the Fondation du patrimoine, which allowed for donations from individuals and companies.
