Bright mosaic pictures (11" x 15") of the Zodiac plus Terra, Sol, Luna and Stella, arranged in a checkerboard fashion, line the interior of the passageway. The artist was John Stephan, who did these as part of the WPA Federal Arts Project in 1936.

Thanks to "A guide to art at the University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign" By Muriel Scheinman for making me aware of these mosaics. See (visit link)
for more information. A quote: "Illustrative of the artist's use of contrasting hues and shapes are the sun and moon panels. The glowing yellow sun, its rays curving and seeming to emanate heat, is laid against a clear blue sky - a combination that intensifies the visual impact. The moon's cold, blue-black pointed edge seems to emphasize its frigidity and distance."

The entrance is also lined with celestial symbol reliefs around the arch. Once inside, turn to the right to find more waymarked sculpture.

Another delightful find amid a busy place.
