Francis Amasa Walker was born on July 2, 1840 in Boston, MA. He graduated from Amherst College and was commissioned an officer in the 15th Massachusetts Infantry where he served as assistant Adjutant General. After the Civil War, at age 24, he was awarded the honorary title of Brevet Brigadier General, United States Volunteers.

He served on the editorial staff of the Springfield Republican before becoming the Chief of the Bureau of Statistics. In 1882, he then became President of the American Statistical Association in 1882, President of the American Economic Association in 1886, and vice president of the National Academy of Sciences in 1890. He was the President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1881 to until his death on January 5, 1897.
