Mr. and Mrs. Baugh are buried together in the northeast quadrant of the cemetery, their resting places marked by a modern, gray granite headstone with the family name, "Baugh", prominent on both sides. The headstone is on a granite base with two vases, and each has a section with their personal information:

Sam A.
Mar. 17, 1914
Dec. 17, 2008
Pretty Good Cow Man

Edmonia G.
Nov. 27, 1915
Oct. 30, 1990

------

Note the "Cow Man" reference: Sammy Baugh preferred his life as a rancher to the career he had on the gridiron, for which there is no reference on the headstone.
Description:
Texas native Sammy Baugh excelled as an athlete in basketball, baseball, and football, and he actually preferred baseball, earning his nickname of "Slingin' Sammy" as an infielder and playing in the farm system for the St. Louis Cardinals. Circumstances pushed him into a career as a quarterback, although he also punted and played as a defensive back. He starred at Texas Christian University, where he was a two-time All-American, leading the Horned Frogs to two bowl game victories

Professionally, he starred immediately with the Washington Redskins, leading them to an NFL championship in his rookie season (1937), and then to another in 1942. At the time of his retirement after the 1952 season, he held thirteen NFL records -- as of this posting, he still holds two as a quarterback -- and that included his performance outside the quarterback role. He revolutionized the game by giving legitimacy to the forward pass and establishing the role of the quarterback to what it is today. He was one of seventeen stars inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

After his retirement, Baugh tried his hand at coaching at both the college level (Hardin-Simmons University) and professionally with the New York Titans and the Houston Oilers. He even tried acting, but ultimately settled into ranching near Aspermont in West Texas.
