"Álvaro Cunqueiro Mora. (Mondoñedo, Galicia, December 22, 1911- Vigo, February 28, 1981). Writer and chronicler, great connoisseur of Spanish gastronomy. He studied Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santiago de Compostela between 1927 and 1934. In 1929 he collaborated in various magazines, such as Vallibria and Galiza. He published his first book of poems, Mar ao Norde, in 1932, followed by Poemas do si e non in 1933. He combines this activity with his collaborations (poems and articles) in other magazines and newspapers such as Céltiga, Descobrimento, and El Compostelano . During the Civil War, and linked to the conservative nationalism of the Galeguista Party, he took refuge in Ortigueira, where he works as a teacher at the Santa Marta school and assiduously collaborates in the institution's weekly newspaper. In 1938 he was registered in the General Register of Journalists and began to be known for his work in Spanish in the publications Pueblo gallego de Vigo, La voz de España de San Sebastián, and the ABC de Madrid. This activity as a journalist does not imply an abandonment of poetry, since he published Elegías and songs in 1940 and also his well-known plays Rogelia en Finisterre (1941), El caballero, la muerte y el diablo and two or three other stories (1945). ), The ballad of the ladies of the past time (1945), and San Gonzalo (1945). From Madrid he collaborates sporadically in literary magazines such as Finisterre and Posío and finally decides to return to Galicia in 1946, where he continues his intellectual work and his collaboration with the main Galician newspapers. In 1964 he entered the Royal Galician Academy with his speech Tesouros novos e vellos, a classic piece of contemporary Galician literature. As a writer he wins numerous awards, including the National Critics Award and the Nadal Award, and as a journalist, the famous Conde de Godó Award. On May 17, 1991, the Galician Literature celebration takes place in his honor. At present, several awards bear his name, such as the National Prize for Gastronomic Journalism and the Álvaro Cunqueiro Prize for Teatrais Texts."
