Part of the Metropolitan Area Projects Plan (MAPS) public works project funded in the late 1990s was an initiative to build a series of dams on the North Canadian River downstream of Lake Overholser. The dams were completed in 2004 at a cost of $53.5 million.
The Boathouse District was established 2006 with the building of the Chesapeake Boathouse. It brought rowing and other watersports, along with physical training and other recreation to the new river areas.
The Devon Boathouse was completed in 2010, followed by the Finish Line Tower in 2011 and the CHK/Central Boathouse in 2015. Soon, the site was designated as a US Olympic training site for kayaking and canoeing.
In 2013, the SandRidge Sky Trail opened. At 80 feet high, it is the tallest adventure course of it's kind in the world. The custom 8 pole, 6-level Sky Trail Explorer features 36 individual interactive elements for participants to step over, climb under and make their way across.
Riversport Rapids was built in 2016 bringing whitewater rafting and kayaking OKC, and in 2020, SurfOKC was built with a FlowMaster surf machine (like the ones on cruise ships) bringing surfing. @021 is scheduled for the opening of SkiOKC for indoor "snow" skiing.
