The memorial represents a cage that was used to transport the miners from the surface to the coal seams and back again.

Made from clay tiles each of the four faces of the cage have relief sculptures showing scenes from the history of the mine.

The main side of the memorial depicts the miners standing in the cage in cramped conditions on two levels.

The face opposite shows two miners standing side by side working at a cola face.

The third face also shows miners working down the mine, but in this case operating a large mechanised drilling machine to extract the coal.

The fourth and final face celebrates the dates of the Allerton and Silkstone branch of the National Union Of Mineworkes (NUM) that operatied from 1882 to 1992 but also shows scenes from the 1990s when there was a national mining strike that lasted a year, before the strike finally collapsed and the men returned to work. During this time the miner's wives went on marches to support the husband's cause.

The mine had continued to operate for 110 years and in the end did not run out of coal, but the demand for coal had declined over time and coal mining had become unprofitable but also unpopular with a move towards using cleaner fuel.

In front of the relief sculpture there are also two coal trucks with names of 86 men who had died in the mine during its years of operation.
