The Pigeon Creek Schoolhouse has been relocated twice!
The Zeeland Historical Society One-Room Schoolhouse Tour information panel for the Pigeon Creek Schoolhouse states:
“16788 Pierce Street West Olive
Pigeon Creek Schoolhouse - The Pigeon Creek
Schoolhouse Preservation Society
The Pigeon Creek Schoolhouse was constructed on it’s
current site in 1878. It was a functioning one-room
school until 1961. Leslie Fuite purchased the property
and move the schoolhouse behind his Pierce Street
home where it sat undisturbed for about forty years. In
2001, the Fuite property was to be sold. So in 2002 a
neighbor, Diane Edward (Cole) Fahndrich, started a 501
(c)(3) non-profit organization. The original land and the
schoolhouse was donated to the Pigeon Creek
Schoolhouse Preservation Society. Paul Zelenka
(current Vice President) was instrumental in this
donation. The schoolhouse was then moved back onto
it’s original cornerstones and the bell returned to a
recreated belfry. The goal of the Society is to restore
and preserve the Pigeon Creek One-Room
Schoolhouse. We are still working on the restoration
and some modernizing (bathroom, kitchenette and
handicap ramp). The Society plans to preserve this
one-room schoolhouse as a historic location for the
community to use and enjoy.”
