The Monroe County Confederate Memorial stands adjacent to U. S. Route 219, about 1-mile north of the Town of Union, West Virginia. A descendant of Allen Caperton donated the plot of land to the Daughters of the Confederacy in the late 1890’s. Mr. Caperton held the distinction of being both a United States and a Confederate Senator. Allen Capeton was a descendent of Hugh Caperton who was a United States Congressman form 1813 – 1815. This monument was dedicated on August 21, 1901 before a crowd of 10,000 people. The featured speaker was Confederate General John Echols who once lived nearby.
