Reformationen i Norden splittede den Romersk Katolske kirke og dannede de Evangelistiske samfund. Martin Luther (1484-1546) , præst i Wittenberg, var en af de stærkeste fortalere for en reformation af kirken. I 1517 fremlagde Martin Luther 95 teser, som gjorde op med den katolske kirkes brug af aflad. Det var en offentlig kritik af pavekirken og Luthers synspunkter spredt ud i Europa i form af bøger og sedler.. I 1530erne brød den katolske kirkeorganisation sammen i Norden. I 1539 underskrev Christian 3. Kirkeordinansen, som var lovgrundlaget for, hvordan den nye evangeliske kirke var organiseret.

The Luther tree is planted in front of Sct. Peders Church in Næstved.
The Reformation in the Nordic countries split the Roman Catholic Church and formed the Evangelical societies. Martin Luther (1484-1546), pastor of Wittenberg, was one of the strongest advocates of a reformation of the church. In 1517, Martin Luther presented 95 theses that put an end to the Catholic Church's use of indulgences. It was a public critique of the papacy and Luther's views spread throughout Europe in the form of books and notes. In the 1530s, the Catholic Church organization collapsed in the Nordic countries. In 1539, Christian III signed the Church Ordinance, which was the legal basis for how the new evangelical church was organized.
