Located in downtown, at 3 S. Main, City Hall is located in a one-story concrete block building with a flat roof. The building has no windows, and has an area at the front where it appears a former storefront has been filled in. The entrance has an automatic sliding door and sidelight, and a cloth canopy reading CITY HALL.

The town of Coalgate is the county seat for Coal County. The town was incorporated in 1898. The area which was part of the Choctaw Nation was first settled in 1889 at the intersection now of U.S. Highway 75 and State Highway 31. It was a coal mining camp. In 1899 there were eight coal mines, transporting 28 railroad carloads of coal daily. The town thrived until the early 1920's when the coal mines closed because of union strikes, and a boll weevil infestation destroyed the cotton crops. Then came the Depression of the 1930's. Today the population stands at about 1950.

The City has a home rule charter, council, manager form of city government.
