Clock in the church tower of the 'Grote of Johanneskerk'
The original medieval church of Lekkerkerk was destroyed by Guelders troops in 1512. The church was then rebuilt and was a cross church with a three-sided choir closure. In 1575 or 1576 (during the Eighty Years' War) this church was set on fire by one of the warring factions and partly destroyed. [1] The rebuilt church was completed in 1615. This was a church without a choir and transept arms, which in fact created a hall church. The church has a nave that is six bays long. After the tower collapsed on August 28, 1779, the entire western (front) facade was renewed according to a design by G. van der Linden from The Hague. This rebuilding is mentioned on a brick above the western entrance. [2]
The floor of the church was raised several times, namely in 1722, 1780, 1816 and 1871. [3] The interior of the church was renovated in 1954 by interior designer H.G. Reitsma. The church was restored from 1980 to 1982 and the renovations from 1954 were reversed. Source: Wikipedia
