The coat-of-arms has a gold background depicting a cow hide. The quartered shield shows symbols of the wool trade.
On 1 and 4 bale hooks are depicted. Bale hooks which were used to hold on to the ungainly, large bales of wool when moving them.
Quarters 2 and 3 depict teasels. Teasels are a prickly part of a plant which dries like a sharp hairbrush. These were used for 'carding wool' and to raise the nap of the finished cloth before the introduction of mechanisation.
The wool trade and cloth making was of great important in the town for over 600 years.
This is reflected in the motto – 'PANNUS MIHI PANIS' which is interpreted as ‘wool is my bread’.
