One acre of burial ground was given by Colonel Benjamin Freeman to the Poll Parish of Southbridge, in May, 1801. The deed is recorded in Worcester County Courthouse. Later the Poll Parish was incorporated into the Town of Southbridge. Additional adjoining sections of land were purchased later so the active portion of the cemetery embraces about 25 acres. In 1921, thirty additional acres of undeveloped forest land adjoining the cemetery was given to the Town by Mrs. Ella Cole, to be used as a cemetery when needed.
