The Hayward House at 52 Elm Street is a gambrel-roofed Cape, believed to be among the earliest surviving houses in the town. The one-and-a-half story main mass consists of a four-bay wide, double-pile block with two smaller, one-bay-deep ells. A five light transom sits atop the center entrance on the main facade. Two windows are located to the right of the entry and one window is centered to the left. The gambrel ends have three windows on the main level and two on the upper level. The off-center chimney, while broad, is particularly short. Two ells augment the main living area of the house. The application of wood shingles in the mid-twentieth century has obliterated any visible details at the corner boards or window surrounds. The rural setting is enhanced by a flower garden and small pond to the rear of the main massing. Fieldstone walls are found in a number of areas around the property. A twentieth-century two-car garage sits on the opposite side of the street built in a style to imitate the house.
