In autumn 1832, author Washington Irving embarked on a month-long journey through Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma.

Irving and his party encamped near the site of this monument on October 29, 1832. This was 75 years before Oklahoma became a state.

This monument was erected in 1932, by the Parent Teachers Association on the 100th anniversary of Washington Irving's visit.

Text of the plaque reads:
COMMEMORATING WASHINGTON IRVING'S "TOUR ON THE PRAIRIES" AND ENCAMPMENT NEAR THIS SITE OCTOBER 29, 1832: THE PARENT-TEACHERS ASSOCIATION ERECTS THIS MARKER OCTOBER 29, 1932.
