The area was once the site of Ledston Luck Coal mine which was sunk in the 1870s and was in production until 1986.

Through the combined processes of natural colonisation and an early 1990s landscape improvement scheme the former colliery has transformed into a beautiful nature reserve with a wide range of anural habitats.

This information board is the western entrance to the reserve on Ridge Road (A656).
