The plaque says, "In a desert full of short scrub, a grove of Sycamore, Willow and Cottonwoods marked an oasis that drew a group of Spanish explores, led by Juan Batista de Anza, into its cool shadows. There they met local indians who invited Juan and his party to stay as their guests. The area was also a watering hole for local bears, which led Juan to call the area Arroyo Los Osos. Among Juan's soldiers was Felipe Santiago Tapia, whose grandson Tiburcio Tapia became one of the area's first ranchers."
