The tower was built in 1969 by the joint venture of utility companies SEP (succeeded in 2000 by grid operator TenneT) for communication between substations in the high-voltage grid. Today the building functions as a transmission station for digital radio and television signals.
The tower serves as a transmission tower for, among others, Radio 538 and Arrow Classic Rock until the spring of 2009. UMTS services from KPN are also offered through this tower and, since June 2011, also for Vodafone.
Similar towers have been built for the PTT / KPN in Haarlem and Wormer.
The 112-meter-high tower exceeds the 93-meter-high St. Eusebius Church, but the structure, including the mast, measures a total height of 149 meters.
The nickname KEMA tower is due to the fact that the tower was built on the business park where the KEMA is located in the west of Arnhem
