"The so-called Casas de Paredes of A Coruña are unique constructions made from the year 1778, within the neoclassical style that various military engineers from various backgrounds were developing in northern Galicia, especially in the city of Ferrol. They owe their name to Captain General Garcia de Paredes, great promoter of the project.
Although the neoclassical style was first developed in Galicia (quite prematurely) in the city of Santiago by the architect Domingo Antonio Lois Montegudo (creator of the Porta da Acibecharía and the Chapel of Communion of the Compostela Cathedral and the Pazo de Bóveda in Terra de Lemos ), really began to spread and reach a certain privilege in the country thanks to a group of engineers belonging to the military corps who were in Galicia because of the Bourbon reformist companies, and which included the construction of fortifications, road networks, or the arsenal of Ferrol . These engineers had remarkable technical training and a marked rationalist aesthetic. In addition to these technical-military constructions, they also made other unique constructions —civil and religious— during their stay in Galicia. Two of the most outstanding engineers belonging to this group are the Frenchman Carlos Lemaur (who drew up the plans for the Pazo de Raxoi in Compostela) and Julián Sánchez Bort from Conquense (responsible for the new façade of the Cathedral of Lugo and chief architect of the concathedral of San Xiao de Ferrol)
The construction of the houses of Paredes began in the year 1778. The main objective of the construction plan, which was not fully realized, was to beautify the view of the city from the sea. The initial plan was to include the entire Atlantic façade of Marineda, that is, the section between the Canton Grande and the Royal Gate, leaving the Casa da Aduana as a central element. However, due to the lack of budgets, and even with the land already in place, the work was not completed (it highlights the void formed by the prairie of the alley of A Estacada). It was one of the most unique projects carried out in the city of A Coruña during the Enlightenment. Several architects, engineers, foremen and stonemasons took part in the project. Pedro Martín Cermeño, born in Melilla and known for designing the New Cathedral of Lleida and the Church of San Miguel do Porto in the Barceloneta district of Barcelona, ??was the one who designed the entire front.

The constructions show a phyllo-illustrated conception, linked to the French architecture of the time, specifically to the port. On the lower porticoes, on the first floor, the balcony balconies stand out, in which windows decorated with triangular pediments open. On the second floor, the same rows of windows are repeated, in this case only with some moldings as decoration. These are very academic façades, with porticos, balconies and an attic with roofs on all four sides.

It was one of the first modern urban experiments in the city of A Coruña and Galicia in general, and sought, under the enlightened ideas, to provide health to the neighborhood of A Peixería, as well as renewing the appearance of the city, which began to gain more commercial importance. ."
