"The Walls of the Old City correspond to the original settlement of the city and are declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. Most of the historic buildings are housed inside and its streets still retain their old layout as well as a large number of old-fashioned houses.
The fortifications that protected the Old City enclosure had their origin in the reign of Henry III, in the last years of the 14th century. Remains of the Defensive Walls are preserved as well as three gates that opened the city to the sea along the Paseo del Parrote, facing the bay. The bastion known as the Old Fortress is also preserved, which is the current Garden of San Carlos.
Following the Paseo del Parrote is the Wall and Gate of San Miguel built in 1607 in front of the Castle of San Antón.
The Puerta del Clavo, which is located in front of the Jardin de San Carlos, was built in 1,676.
The Puerta de la Cruz or del Parrote, in front of the Palace of the Captaincy General, is also from the year 1676.
The gates of the Parrote were declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1944."
