The Wippersmolen in the Dutch municipality of Maassluis has been there since 1726 to drain the Sluispolder. The mill replaced a dilapidated post-mill on the same site. The paddle wheel stood next to the mill and the Wippersmolen was probably built next to the original wheel of its predecessor. In the photo, the shadow on the windmill body shows that it is flattened. The wheel used to be here.
In 1926 the wheel and the interior were removed and a diesel engine was installed, later this became a cylinder engine. Since then, the polder mill has only been used for decoration.
In 1938 a committee raised enough money to restore the mill and thus save it from demolition. In 1972 the mill became the property of the municipality of Maassluis, which restored the mill again. In 1990 the mill was sold to the Delfland Water Board, which maintains the mill and the adjacent miller's house from 1898. Both the Wippersmolen and the adjacent miller's house have the status of a national monument.
