Numerous towns in Oklahoma have beautiful Bob Palmer murals. He and his art students have painted murals all over Oklahoma, as well in a few other states. There are several Palmer murals in the town of Davenport. What makes this unique - something we haven't seen before is a mural painted, not on brick or stucco, but on corrugated metal.
The firehouse is a one-story metal building and the south wall has the segmented metal stripping with raised vertical joints. It must take a special skill to paint the mural up over these raised joints without distorting the overall picture.
The mural has a solid light blue background, with three framed pictures of earlier firehouses at the top. Across the mural are painted various fire-related items: A current fire engine, as well as an antique engine. A fire hydrant and hose and a white emergency station wagon. And at the center, a cute little dalmatian dog looking at the viewer quizzically.
Bob Palmer is retired now, but formerly taught art at the University of Central Oklahoma. The signature block on the lower left shows the studio name, as well as the names of the students who worked on this mural.
