The plaque says: This tree was planted by the Mayoress Mrs H Woods on 6th May 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of their Majesties
King George V and Queen Mary.

The tree is a Fagus sylvatica purpurea or Purple Beech.
The marble stone plaque, which is slowly disappearing into the bowels of the tree, has been replaced by another plaque placed well out of reach of this omnivorous tree.
Location of the tree: Ashburton Domain.
