Prickly Pear Cactus In Bloom mosaic is one of three mosaics that are mounted on a three sided structure located in Heritage Park Place. This mosaic was made possible by Ashcroft Communities in Bloom celebrating their 10th year anniversary 2006 - 2016.
Prickly Pear Cactus In Bloom Mosaic is a 4'x'4 panel with the central focus of a grouping of five flowers in full bloom with Elephant Hill in the background. The Prickly Pear Cactus In Bloom mosaic is a tribute to Ashcroft and Communities in Bloom.
Prickly Pear Cactus thrive in and around Ashcroft in this semi-acrid climate. The prickly pear is a low, spreading plant with needles and beautiful waxy yellow flowers. As alluring as their flowers are, take heed, as they attach to shoes and clothing.
It is interesting to note that this particular cactus is edible: the flesh of the plant can be eaten raw after removing spines and inner seeds and can be dried for storage, the berries are edible and can also be dried for storage and the dried seeds can be ground into a flour.
