The Luxomni community began in 1891 as a railroad flag station for Seaboard Airline, about one mile from Lilburn. The small town had a post office, a church, a Masonic lodge and several residents. The Luxomni Baptist Church was organized July 20, 1895.

Not much is left of what was once Luxomni. The decaying ruins of the general store at one point could still be found standing near the corner of Luxomni Road and Arcado Road, next to the church (near the Railroad Crossing). This has now been demolished. Just past the general store and church is an old building set back in a wooded area with a faded sign reading "Luxomni Sewing Club." Continuing down Luxomni Road will bring you back to Lawrenceville Highway (Highway 29). Luxomni Road continues to be its primary identifier.

The Luxomni Baptist Church has an active congregation. The original building has been replaced by a modern brick building, and the cemetery is nicely maintained.

A sign at the entrance to the cemetery states that the cemetery upkeep is provided by donations to the Luxomni Church Cemetery Trust Fund.

The cemetery has 580 memorials with the oldest dating back to 1836. This memorial shows the following:

---------------------------------------------
                     MATTHEWS
       THOMAS III          NANCY TERRY
                 1773                      1776
   JUNE 24, 1836                      1866

         INTERRED: JUNE 26, 1996
---------------------------------------------

Thomas Matthews was the oldest son of Thomas and Eleanor (McKnight) Matthews. He was born in Laurens Co., SC, probably on the banks of Rabun/Rayburn Creek where his father owned land.

Nancy Terry is the daughter of Thomas Terry and his first wife Elizabeth Harrison. According to Terry family records, Thomas Terry immigrated from England to South Carolina ahead of his wife and children, but his wife Elizabeth contracted yellow fever and died on the way from Charleston to Greenville Co., SC. In 1791.

Around 1800, Thomas Matthews married Nancy Terry and had nine children in all.

These children were:
Eleanor - who married first Thomas Terry and second Thomas Simmons.
Thomas - who married first Julia Ather Matthews and second Elizabeth Roe King.
William - who married Mary Parker.
Elizabeth - who married William P. Phillips.
John - who married first Nancy Watson and second Eliza Cates.
Margaret - who married John Walker Nash, Jr.
Nancy - who died in infancy.
Francis - who died in infancy.

Between 1810 and 1820, Thomas and Nancy moved to Gwinnett Co., GA, where he owned land in District 5, Lot 133. They remained there until they died, and both Thomas and Nancy were buried on their homestead.

In 1996, their graves were relocated to Luxomni Baptist Church Cemetery.
