On display under a tree in this front yard is an Adjustable Width Horse Drawn Shovel Harrow. This piece of ag. equipment was designed for garden use and would be good for busting up clods, weeding the garden, and spreading dirt over seeds that had been sown.

Searching and reading on the internet I found Dr. Evan's dissertation on weed management. Dr. Evan opened his paper by pointing out that weed management has always been an agricultural concern. Farmers started with hand tools, then used horses as a source of farm power, tractors came next and then chemicals. This harrow is one of the stages that weed management tools and techniques have gone through. Of course, removal of weeds was only one use for harrows such as this one.
