The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Historic District located in Cassadaga, Florida has 78 buildings and two contributing objects listed in the National Register of Historic Places Historic District application filed in 1991. These two ‘objects’ are located at the entrance to the historic district on Stevens Street.
From the NRHP application:
“In 1910, the front entrance of the community was moved from Marion Street (one block east of current location) to Stevens Street. In 1928, the Jacob Lumber Company erected brick pillars with stucco surfacing at the entrance to Cassadaga. Standing approximately ten feet in height, the pillars feature square bases capped by cylindrical urns that contain lights. The only contributing objects in the district, the pillars replaced an entrance gate that had been erected at the same location in 1910.”
Today the pillars no longer have the lighted urns capping the tops, but instead have unlit concrete balls. Plaques have been placed on the front of each pillar with Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, EST 1874 and the trademark sunflower emblem found throughout the community. A second smaller plaque with Camp Closed from Dusk to Dawn is also mounted on each pillar. It is unofficially estimated that today these are the most photographed objects in the historic district.
