The mountain is named in honor of an early pioneer in Allegany County, Maryland, thought by some to have gone by the last name of "Evart". In the 1780s, Mr. Evart decided to contemplate his bachelorhood from the isolated mountain top of what is today Evitts Mountain, now in Rocky Gap State Park, far from the comforts of society. He just wanted to be forgotten. So what did we do? Named a mountain after him.

If you want to do the full Evitts Homesite Trail just cross the small cascading stream on the footbridge and begin to climb Evitt's Mountain. This is an ambitious trail that climbs about 1,000 feet in elevation in 2.5 miles (5 miles round-trip) to the Homesite. After visiting the Homesite continue up the mountain an additional mile to the Mason-Dixon Line featuring a monument. Finally, a few 100 feet north of the Mason-Dixon Line there is a clearing offering great views! This trail to the Mason-Dixon Line offers a great hike for those willing to take the challenge. From the trailhead to the Mason-Dixon Line is approx 3.5 miles with approx 1,100 feet in elevation change (7 mile round trip)
