De transformatorhuisjes die in veel plaatsen op het Groninger platteland te vinden zijn, werden gebouwd in opdracht van de N.V. Maatschappij tot Aanleg en Exploitatie van Laagspanningsnetten. Dit elektriciteitsbedrijf werd opgericht in 1913. Het bedrijf, waarin gemeenten uit Groningen en Drenthe deelnamen, verzorgde de distributie van elektriciteit van het eveneens in die tijd opgerichte Groningse PEB naar de gemeenten. De gemeente Groningen nam geen deel in de maatschappij: men wilde daar de elektriciteitsvoorziening in eigen hand houden. In 1920 verzorgde het bedrijf de levering van elektriciteit in 51 gemeenten uit Groningen en Drenthe. In 1967 fuseerde het bedrijf met het PEB tot EGD, het Elektriciteitsbedrijf (later: Energiebedrijf) voor Groningen en Drenthe.

Dit transformatorhuisje staat in Westervelde, in de driehoek waar Hoofdweg en Steeg samenkomen.

Het in lichte en donkere baksteen opgetrokken rechthoekig gebouwtje is gedekt door een met Tuile-du-Nord-pannen belegd zadeldak. Gekoppelde houten korbelen ondersteunen het overstek. De plint van baksteen loopt enigszins taps toe. De opbouw heeft decoratief metselwerk in de zijgevel en topgevels, en smeedijzeren sierankers en ventilatieroosters in de topgevel. Deze bouwstijl wordt ook wel Amsterdamse School genoemd.

The transformer houses that can be found in many places in the Groningen countryside were built by order of the N.V. Maatschappij tot Laying and Exploitation of Low-voltage grids. This electricity company was founded in 1913. The company, in which municipalities from Groningen and Drenthe participated, took care of the distribution of electricity from the Groningen PEB, also established at that time, to the municipalities. The municipality of Groningen did not participate in society: they wanted to keep the electricity supply in their own hands. In 1920 the company supplied electricity to 51 municipalities in Groningen and Drenthe. In 1967 the company merged with PEB to form EGD, the Electricity Company (later: Energy Company) for Groningen and Drenthe.

This transformer house is located in Westervelde, in the triangle where Hoofdweg and Steeg meet.

The rectangular building, built in light and dark brick, is covered by a gable roof covered with Tuile-du-Nord tiles. Coupled wooden corbels support the overhang. The brick plinth is slightly tapered. The structure has decorative masonry in the side and gable walls, and wrought iron decorative anchors and ventilation grilles in the gable facade. This architectural style is also known as the Amsterdam School.
