Tybee Island lies at the mouth of the Savannah River. A tower, to serve as a navigational aid, was first built on the island in 1736 by order of James Oglethorpe, founder and de facto first governor of the colony of Georgia (as well as the subject of a US postage stamp). This original tower eventually fell prey to storms and erosion. A new tower was completed at the current site in 1773 and was subsequently ceded to the federal government when Georgia ratified the US constitution in 1790. It was converted into a lighthouse the very next year.
The current structure dates from just after the Civil War. The tower had been partially destroyed by Confederate troops to prevent its use by the Union. Now standing at 145 ft. tall and fitted with a first order Fresnel lens, the lighthouse was electrified in 1933. This tallest lighthouse in Georgia was one of five Atlantic seaboard lighthouses featured on a set of postage stamps issued in 2003.
