These are two small, identical, shield-shaped boundary markers inscribed ‘W. H. P. 1896’. They are placed on opposite sides of Windsor Road from each other and are part of a long series of similar parish boundary markers around West Ham Parish. The markers take various forms and many of them still survive. At this location the markers show the line of the parish boundary running just to the west of Balmoral Road. It is likely that this area was first developed for housing in around 1896.

These markers were placed here to mark the boundary between West Ham (to the west) and Little Ilford (to the east) parishes. The Manor of Little Ilford is named in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and Little Ilford was established as a rural parish by the late twelfth century, the parish church being St Mary the Virgin on modern Church Road, E12. It was abolished as a civil parish in 1900 and as an ecclesiastical parish in 1938, being absorbed into the parish of East Ham.

Only the plaque on the north side of Windsor Road was available for photography at the time of my visit, the other one being concealed by a parked car.
Type of survey mark: Metal plate.
