There are a number of arable farms nearby to the village growing a variety of crops. A plough is a farm tool for loosening or turning the soil before sowing seed or planting.
This model made of iron has two wheels at the front, two handles at the rear and in the middle a blade attached to cut and loosen the soil.
A horse or sometimes a pair of horses would be attached to the front of the plough with ropes and the ploughman would hold the handles at the back of the plough to keep the plough in as straight a line as possible whilst the horses pull the plough along the field to be ploughed.
Often, but not always a second person would guide the horse at the front.
